Dr Patrick Concannon (ADHD Australia Board Member) and Ms Manish Amin (mother of a 16 year old with ADHD) spoke about ADHD, the stigma and challenges which people live with everyday which the report highlighted.
Dr Concannon spoke about the relevance of the report in highlighting the gaps and priorities which the ADHD community (parents of children with ADHD as well as adults living with ADHD) across Australia overwhelming mentioned how their ADHD affects them on a daily basis. He also went on to say that the report found that those living with ADHD wanted three outcomes.
* Less stigma
* More support in diagnosis and treatment options
* More support in everyday living
Dr Concannon also spoke on the symptoms of ADHD as well as debunking the myth that ADHD medications are over-prescribed.
Manisha Amin is the CEO of the Centre for Inclusive Design and has a son with ADHD. She spoke about the stigma attached to those living with ADHD and the hesitation for those to disclose thier ADHD for fear of being stigmatised and discriminated against. She went on to describe how ADHD is often not diagnosed until the person is an adult, and this can be especially true for women. Meaning that there are a lot of people, especially women who are not diagnosed till they are adults and that the focus on ‘this just being a child’s disability’ is incorrect.
