Community Service Award for ADHD volunteer – Vivian Dunstan
Ms Vivian Dunstan, founder of ADHD Support Australia (previously known as the Northern Beaches ADHD Support Group), was awarded a 2019 Australia Day Outstanding Community Service Award by Mayor Michael Reran of her local Northern Beaches Council in Sydney. She was commended for her dedication to supporting the ADHD community over the last six years.
Vivian founded the Northern Beaches ADHD Support Group in 2013 when her daughter was diagnosed with ADHD. Over the past six years, she has organised over 50 expert speaker evenings on a huge variety of topics related to ADHD. The attendance of up to 120 parents at the events sees consistently high quality speakers visiting to share their knowledge. The evenings also allow parents to connect with each other and find support amongst those who are on a similar journey.
In addition to the speaker evenings, Vivian organises various other events, such as parent gatherings and an annual self-care day for stressed parents. She manages a Facebook page, a private Facebook Group and an online ADHD Book Discussion Group. She regularly attends various events to raise awareness about ADHD among both the general community and the teaching profession. Vivian also facilitates a ‘Parenting Children with ADHD’ six week course, and has just completed training as a certified PEERS coach.
