What is your role at ADHD Australia?
I am a professional volunteer in the Education stream. I am working on resources for schools and educators.
Why did you want to volunteer with ADHD Australia?
I have a lot of lived experiences to share with others, as I understand first-hand the obstacles faced by families and teachers of neurodivergent people. I would like to see neurodiversity viewed in a positive light rather than a negative light. Neurodiversity gives people strengths and talents if they are given a chance to showcase their abilities.
Talk a bit about your ADHD journey
Neurodivergence is common in my extended family, and I have spent a lot of time researching ADHD and how to manage symptoms with and without medication. My experience as a parent and working in schools as a classroom teacher and specialist has given me a better understanding of the needs of neurodivergent students, their parents and family.
What changes or improvements would you like to see in how ADHD is addressed or supported in the community?
I would like to see more priority placed on psychosocial safety of neurodivergent people in schools and more empathy and understanding toward neurodivergent people, both young and old. I would like to see more training in schools and workplaces and a reframing of neurodivergence to emphasise the positive characteristics of people with neurodivergence. Also, a better understanding of the variety of ways neurodivergence presents, particularly in girls and women.
What excites you about volunteering with ADHD Australia? What programs or initiatives are you passionate about?
I am passionate about improving information available to teachers and schools to better their understanding of how to cater for neurodiversity in the classroom.
What does this year’s ADHD Awareness Month theme “Awareness is key” mean for you? How important is awareness?
Awareness of ADHD is important so educators, employees and employers can cater for the needs of neurodivergence and create inclusive learning environments.
What do you do outside of ADHD Australia?
I am an education specialist with my own business Make Create Educate and I consult to schools and educators on digital technologies, curriculum, teaching practice and strategies for implementing education technologies. In my spare time I like spending time with my family, painting and drawing and walking my dog.
